Why Twenty Studios and Not One

It would be simpler to run one website. One upload box, one style menu, one brand to explain. We do not, and the reason is worth writing down, because from the outside twenty domains can look like twenty companies.

They are not. They are one house, one engine, and twenty different style libraries.

A style library is not a filter

When you send a photo of a whale, the styles that flatter it are naturalist plate work, gold-ground icon painting, the great marine traditions. Painted Oceanic carries 55 of them, chosen for animals that live where the light stops.

Point the same generic style menu at a whale and you get Renaissance oil portraiture stretched over a shape it was never made for. It looks like a mistake, because it is one.

That is the whole argument. Painted Wild runs 22 styles built for great beasts. Painted Critters runs 75, because otters and quokkas want comedy handled with a straight face. Painted Threshold runs 18 for houses, where the subject has no eyes and the light on the brickwork has to do all the work instead.

The subject changes what "good" means

Ask an equestrian what a good horse portrait looks like and you will get an answer about conformation — the line of the neck, the set of the shoulder, whether the animal is standing square. Ask a cat owner and you will get an answer about expression. Both are right, and no single studio can be tuned for both at once.

So Painted Mares is built around sporting art and 70+ gallery styles that know what a horse is shaped like. Painted Whiskers is built around the face.

The cost of doing it this way

We should say the obvious thing: this is harder for you. You have to find the right door instead of landing on one. Twenty names are twenty things to remember, and more than one person has emailed us at the wrong studio.

That is why the index exists, and why it is the whole homepage. Every studio the house runs is on it, in order, and you can find yours by scrolling rather than by reading.

What is shared

Underneath, everything is the same: the same engine, the same free preview before you pay, the same archival print and canvas options, the same people. Choosing a studio is choosing a style library and a point of view — not a different company.

If your subject genuinely sits between two studios — a dog and their person, a home and the family on the porch — either door works. Pick the one whose subject you care most about getting right.

Written by Painted. Every studio in the house is listed on the index — pick the one built for your subject, and the portrait looks intentional rather than generic.

For the record

What is Painted Family?

Painted Family is the index of the Painted studios: each one paints one kind of subject from a photograph, and this site links to every one that is open. It is operated by PaintedApp, LLC.

What does it sell?

Nothing itself. Every portrait, print and file is ordered on the studio’s own site, at the price that studio shows before you pay.

How do I reach a person?

Write to support@painted.app. By post: PaintedApp, LLC, 1327 SE Tacoma St #394, Portland, OR 97202.
