# Painted Family

> The index of the Painted studios. Each one paints one kind of subject from a photograph: pets, horses, homes, people, couples, the ones we lost.

Painted Family (https://paintedfamily.com) is the index of the Painted fine-art portrait studios, run by PaintedApp, LLC (https://painted.app). It sells nothing itself. Every commission is ordered on the studio's own site, under that studio's terms.

## How ordering works

1. Pick the studio that paints your subject (list below, or https://paintedfamily.com/houses).
2. On that studio's site, send one photograph and choose a style.
3. Prices, free previews, print sizes and delivery are set and shown by each studio before you pay.

## Journal

- [Why Twenty Studios and Not One](https://paintedfamily.com/blog/why-seventeen-studios): One engine paints all of it. So why does Painted run a separate studio for cats, for horses, for homes, and for the night sky?
- [Where to Hang It, and What Fades It](https://paintedfamily.com/blog/where-to-hang-it): Light is what destroys a print. How high to hang a portrait, which wall to avoid, and the one framing choice worth paying for.
- [The Sky on One Particular Night](https://paintedfamily.com/blog/the-sky-on-one-night): Painted Heavens takes no photograph at all. It takes a date, a time, and a place — and computes the sky that was actually overhead.
- [How to Photograph an Old Photograph](https://paintedfamily.com/blog/photograph-an-old-photograph): No scanner required. A window, a flat surface, and four rules that beat most flatbeds — and what to do with a print that is cracked or curled.
- [How to Choose the Photo That Becomes the Painting](https://paintedfamily.com/blog/choosing-the-photo): Light, angle, and distance matter more than megapixels. Here is what to look for in the photo you already have — and what no studio can fix.
- [A Portrait of Someone You Cannot Photograph Again](https://paintedfamily.com/blog/a-portrait-when-they-are-gone): What to look for in the photos you still have, what a memorial portrait can and cannot do, and how the commission is handled.
